Parent Prep Guide

Preparing for Pate's Grammar School 11+ Exam

1

Pate's Grammar School in Gloucestershire is one of the most selective and competitive grammar schools in the South West. It uses GL Assessment papers (Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths, and English), but the exam is significantly harder than a standard GL paper. Parents should be aware that practising with typical GL materials alone will not be sufficient preparation — your child will need to go beyond standard practice papers to succeed.

2

The biggest challenge is vocabulary. The Verbal Reasoning section uses advanced words that go well beyond what most Year 6 children encounter, and tutors recommend building vocabulary to secondary-school level before the exam. Maths is also notably harder, with multi-step word problems and questions that require genuine reasoning rather than just applying formulas. English comprehension passages are more literary and complex than standard papers, asking children to make inferences and read between the lines.

3

Time pressure is another key factor. Children who haven't been drilled in pacing often run out of time, particularly in Verbal Reasoning and Maths. Start timed practice early and regularly so your child becomes comfortable working quickly and accurately under pressure. The Verbal Reasoning questions also require careful reading and multi-step thinking — they're not straightforward pattern-spotting exercises, so your child needs to understand how questions are framed, not just recognise question types.

4

The registration deadline is typically in June, with around 180 places available. The school does not publish a qualifying score, so you won't know in advance what mark your child needs to achieve. Check the school's admissions page each year for the current deadline and any other specific requirements.
