Sutton Grammar School 11+ Exam: What Parents Need to Know
Sutton Grammar School is a boys-only grammar school that uses a shared entrance exam called the Sutton SET, administered by GL Assessment. This test is sat by five schools in the Sutton Consortium (including Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wallington County Grammar School, and others), typically in October. The exam covers Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics, and English — all in multiple-choice format. Registration usually closes in July for the following September entry.
The key challenge with Sutton Grammar is not that the exam paper itself is dramatically harder than a standard GL test, but that it's highly competitive. As one of the more selective schools in the consortium, the pass mark is set very high and the cohort of children taking the test is well-prepared. This means your child will need to score exceptionally well to gain a place — there's little room for error.
Vocabulary is the biggest differentiator in the Verbal Reasoning section. Tutors and parents consistently report that less common words (beyond everyday vocabulary) appear regularly and catch unprepared children off guard. If your child is aiming for Sutton Grammar, building vocabulary from Year 4 onwards is essential. Mathematics is fairly standard for GL papers, though multi-step word problems and data interpretation questions can trip up children who haven't practised these types thoroughly. English comprehension passages are age-appropriate, but inference and deduction questions are the trickiest part — children who read widely tend to do noticeably better.
Time pressure is moderate to significant across all sections. Many parents report that children who hadn't practised under strict time limits found the exam stressful. Timed practice papers are strongly recommended as part of your preparation strategy, so your child becomes comfortable working quickly and accurately under pressure.
