Preparing for Wallington County Grammar School's 11+ Exam

1

Wallington County Grammar School uses the Sutton SET (Selective Eligibility Test), a shared exam taken by all grammar schools in the Sutton Consortium. This is a GL Assessment paper with four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths, and English. The exam is designed to be selective and to differentiate between well-prepared candidates, so it sits slightly above the difficulty of a standard GL paper.

2

The biggest challenge most families encounter is vocabulary. The Verbal Reasoning section draws on sophisticated words (Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary) that go well beyond typical Year 6 expectations. Parents and tutors consistently highlight this as the area where children need the most preparation — wide reading and deliberate vocabulary building are essential. Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths are generally in line with standard GL papers, though multi-step word problems in Maths can catch out unprepared candidates.

3

You should expect moderate time pressure — the exam is not frantically rushed, but well-prepared children report feeling the pace, particularly in Verbal Reasoning. English comprehension passages are age-appropriate but require children to read between the lines and make inferences rather than simply spotting surface details. Children who read widely tend to find this section more manageable.

4

Start preparation early and focus on building your child's vocabulary through reading, discussion, and targeted word study. Use GL familiarisation materials and past papers as your primary resource, and consider whether a tutor experienced with the Sutton Consortium papers would be helpful for your family.
